Meet the Texas-Built Swimbait Rod Taking on the Big Names

Shop for swimbait rods long enough and you'll notice a wide range of prices. You can find options below $300, while some premium swimbait rods cost $400–$500 or more. If you want a rod built by hand in America, it's worth looking closely at what your money buys.

Traverse is our answer to that.

Old 18 Traverse swimbait rod with carbon-fiber handle and ALPS reel seat

Hand-Built in Texas by Jake Brewer

Every Traverse swimbait rod is built by hand in Texas by master rod builder Jake Brewer. Jake has spent decades building rods, and that experience goes into the details, from guide placement to the finish on the wraps. You know who's behind the build and where the work happens.

An American Northfork Blank at the Core

The blank is the heart of any rod, and Traverse starts with an American-made Northfork carbon blank. Both models pair that blank with a mod-fast action.

The rest of the build is chosen to back that blank up. The one-piece carbon-fiber handle has a tacky grip, the reel seat is from ALPS, and the guides are marine-grade stainless.

Where $329 Fits

Swimbait rods cover a wide price range. Traverse sits at $329: hand-built in Texas on an American blank, without stepping into the $400-plus price bracket.

That's the sweet spot we wanted for anglers looking for American-built quality: Jake's experience, a Northfork blank and a full carbon-fiber handle, at a price that leaves room for the rest of your setup.

Heavy or Extra Heavy: Match It to Your Baits

Both models are 7'10" one-piece casting rods, and both cost $329, so start with how heavy your baits are.

Traverse Heavy swimbait rod for baits from 2 to 6 oz.

Traverse Extra Heavy swimbait rod for baits from 6 to 16 oz.

At 6 oz, the two ratings overlap. Tell us which baits you fish most often and we'll help you choose between them.
